Wines of the Sonoma Coast

Crisp. Full of pronounced flavors. Bold without being overbearing. These are just three descriptions of wines found along the Sonoma Coast. Located in Northwest California, the Sonoma Coast shares a landscape with the coastline of the Pacific Ocean and rolling hills with vineyards covering their slopes. The Sonoma Coast is an appellation within Sonoma County that holds a piece of history as the birthplace of Californian wines. Established in 1987, Sonoma County produces almost double the amount of wines as Napa Valley despite the latter being the more popularized wine county in Northern California. In recent years, the Sonoma Coast has seen an increase in visitors and consumers looking to explore the terroir. Thanks to the morning fog and cool nights following warm afternoons, the Sonoma Coast’s climate helps their vineyards have their hand in producing very good to outstanding quality wine.

Looking for Burgundy-style wines in California? Look no further than Sonoma Coast. The Pinot Noir it produces is silky and complex while leaving a pronounced flavor lingering in the mouth. Notes of dark cherries, strawberries, and cocoa are prevalent but Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir’s are also layered with notes of orange oil, Earl Grey, and dried rose. Wineries like Dumol Joy Vineyard, Emeritus Vineyards, and Fort Ross Winery are among those producing award-winning Pinot Noir. Chardonnay from the Sonoma Coast is known for having a balance of minerality and high acidity. Notes of lemon zest, green apple, and white peach shine bright while notes of vanilla rang true for Chardonnay made in oak barrels. Sonoma Curter Vineyards, The Calling, and La Crema are showcasing Chardonnay which creates delicious vintages.

Fort Ross, Petaluma, and Bodega Bay are worth a visit during a trip to the coast in search of amazing wines. Add in the views from the coastline and you a have wine trip for the books!
